Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay

I spent Easter Sunday among the lustrous works of painter and textile designer Sonia Delaunay (1885 – 1979). The Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum on 91st street and 5th Avenue is currently hosting Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay on the second floor.

Side by side with her husband and painter, Robert Delaunay, Sonia cultivated a resonating artistic career in Europe. Sonia began designing embroidered avant-guarde fashions which developed into a post as textile designer at Metz & Co. department store in Amsterdam. Swatch books, color wave charts, and sketches compliment the finished examples of Delaunay’s fabrics in the exhibition.

What captivated me were the color nuances found in her embroidered overcoats and driving hats.

But, the knitted and silk embroidered swimming costumes were best of all!
